Ladder Pick Game

What is Ladder Pick?

Ladder Pick (Amidakuji) is a classic decision tool: connect top starting points to bottom results with vertical lines, then follow randomly placed horizontal rungs down to see who lands on what. Go down, cross on a rung, go down again — until you reach a result. It runs in the browser with no install on desktop and mobile.

The result looks tangled but the rule is simple and fair. No one knows their result in advance, so it’s easy for everyone to accept for turns, roles, prizes, or penalties.

How to use

  1. Set the entrants (starts) and results (win/lose, roles, order).
  2. Generate the ladder; rungs are placed at random.
  3. Each start descends, crossing on rungs.
  4. Where you land is your result.

Great for

  • Assigning roles/chores — fairly split who does what.
  • Prizes or penalties — random, so everyone accepts it.
  • Turn order — games, presentations.
  • Ice-breaker — revealing results together is the fun.

How it works

Each start maps to exactly one result, so no two people ever get the same one. More rungs make paths harder to predict, but every start still reaches a distinct result — perfect for a fair one-to-one assignment.

Frequently asked questions

Can results be rigged?

No — rungs are random, unknown beforehand.

Can two land on one result?

No — it’s one-to-one.

Mobile-friendly?

Yes — runs in the browser, great for groups.

Does it pick just one item?

Each starting point leads to a result. It suits assigning roles or turns to several people.

Can role labels repeat?

Different slots can have the same text if you enter duplicates. Use distinct labels when roles must differ.
